For me, nutrition means life and quality of life – OGUNTONA

*Professor Babatunde Oguntona

About 50 students studying Nutrition at postgraduate level in several Nigerian Universities have been beneficiaries of Scholarships provided by a Food manufacturing company through this linkage. Nutrition Club For me to have been able to develop a programme for the department was indeed a thing of joy for me. Secondly, to create awareness on nutrition, we were able to start what we called the Nutrition Club, a small club where we brought together al the people who were in disciplines and in tangential to nutrition because we couldnt find anybody with a nutrition qualification. One of the achievements of the Club was the production of a newsletter which circulated in the community and we were able to invite notable people to come to major activities like the world food day on October 1.

What Does Your Digestive System Do?

You need guts to be happy no matter what: The importance of a healthy digestive system for enhanced immunity

The large bowel, or colon, is about three to four inches wide and five feet long. This is the last place where water and some minerals are absorbed before the rest goes out of the digestive system in the form of a bowel movement. “What is left at this point is roughage or fibrous food particles that can’t be absorbed,” explains Koch. “Bacteria ferment some of this roughage into vitamins and most of the remaining liquids are absorbed here.” “Our digestive system should be appreciated because of its essential reason for existence getting the nutrients that keep us alive,” says Koch. He also points out that we should appreciate how much pleasure we get from a healthy digestive system . “The smell and taste of food, the pleasure of swallowing, and of feeling pleasantly full after a good meal are important parts of being human.

Recently there has been one more addition to the nervous system: The gut, also known as the enteric nervous system. It is ensconced inside sheaths of tissue found in the lining of the esophagus, stomach, small intestine and colon. It is known to have an important function in regulating our emotions. Isn’t it obvious why symptoms from the two brains are often the source of confusion? How intestinal flora aid digestion and foods that help build them Cells in the human digestive system lack some of the enzymes needed to break down certain types of food. The good bacteria in our gut have what it takes to break down those types of food, however. These micro-flora also make the B vitamin complex and hence aid the absorption of lipids, calcium, iron and magnesium.

Pregnancy Wisdom Questioned: Are Alcohol, Caffeine Really Off Limits?

Not true says Oster. I found that evidence overwhelmingly suggested that having an occasional drink, even maybe a glass of wine a day, is not dangerous, she said. Rule number two: Pregnant women should cut out their morning cup of Joe. Again, according to Oster, this is not true. I found that caffeine in moderation is also fine, she explained. Something like two to four cups a day, depending on how cautious you want to be. Rule number three: Working in your yard could harm your baby. True, says Oster.

The Facts About Eye Floaters and Flashes

An annoying floater in the center of your vision sometimes can be relieved by rolling your eyes around, which swirls the vitreous gel in the eyeball and gets the floater to move away. A surgical procedure called vitrectomy removes the vitreous gel from the eye and replaces it with saline solution, but it is a major procedure that normally is not considered worth the risk. When Retinal Detachment Is the Problem The tugging from the vitreous gel can sometimes cause a more serious medical condition in which the retina tears and detaches from the eye. If this occurs, you could partially or completely lose your vision in that eye. Symptoms of retinal detachment include: A sudden increase in the number of eye floaters and flashes you are experiencing, or the sudden appearance of them for the first time. The loss of your peripheral vision, usually appearing like a curtain or shadow that moves toward the center of your vision over time.

Snoring, mouth-breathing tots more likely to develop behavioral problems

Snoring: A New Tip-Off To Stroke and Heart Disease

By study’s end, the researchers found children whose sleep-disordered breathing peaked at 6 or 18 months old were between 40 and 100 percent more likely to develop behavioral problems by age 7, compared with kids who breathe normally during sleep. What’s more, kids who had the worst behavioral problems had breathing problems throughout their infancy, which peaked when the child was 30 months old. “This is the strongest evidence to date that snoring, mouth breathing, and apnea [abnormally long pauses in breathing during sleep] can have serious behavioral and social-emotional consequences for children,” study author Dr. Karen Bonuck, professor of family and social medicine and of obstetrics & gynecology and women’s health at Einstein, said in written statement . “Parents and pediatricians alike should be paying closer attention to sleep-disordered breathing in young children, perhaps as early as the first year of life.” According to the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Health and Neck Surgery, nearly one in 10 children snore regularly and 2 to 4 percent have sleep apnea. Common causes of sleep-disorder breathing are enlarged tonsils or adenoids. What does snoring have to do with bad behavior?

Your post-pregnancy tales: Stretch marks, scars and ‘breasts like zeppelins’

Abby Richon

[ Beyond Vaccines: 5 Things that Might Really Cause Autism ] Mercury in the environment comes from natural sources, such as volcanoes, as well as from man-made sources, such as coal-burning power plants. Much of the world’s mercury is eventually deposited into the oceans, where the chemical enters the food chain and gets into fish. Fish are high in nutrients, such as vitamin E and omega-3 fatty acids, that aid healthy brain development, and generally have low levels of mercury. But studies have shown that exposure to high levels of mercury is linked to developmental problems , so exposure for pregnant women is a concern. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration currently recommends pregnant women limit their consumption of fish, but the effects of low-level exposure to mercury remains unknown, the researchers said. The study, part of an ongoing project called the Seychelles Child Development Study, involved 1,784 children and young adults, and their mothers.

Mental health and spiritual power

One grasps them in a different way from human reason. But knowledge of them is practical in healing oneself and others, and this knowledge can be gained through the study and practice of spiritual teaching. When Jesus said, “I and my Father are one” ( John 10:30 ) and “The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do” ( John 5:19 ), this can be understood to mean each of us is inseparable from the perfect Mind, the loving Father and Mother of all. This relationship gives the ability to act reasonably and lovingly, an ability that can’t be lost. As a Christian Science practitioner who treats people through prayer, I’ve found that these spiritual truths have strengthened my conviction that healing, not just managing, mental disorders is possible.

Mental health in the US: New ideas on care emerge

The principled two-year legal campaign to have the Supreme Court strike down the law proved futile. Police, on one occasion, even had to drag her out of the middle of a busy street where she stood screaming at tormenters seen only by her. When Lisa dropped out of school, Sacher and her husband acted on their feelings of love and responsibility for their daughter and tried to bring her home for treatment. But Lisa resisted, and they found out they had no authority to compel the school or anyone else to help: Lisa was no longer a minor.

5 Point Digital Health Checkup

Business Model: This isnt just about reimbursement or cost its about rights, responsibilities, and yes, liability. Contrary to the notion that healthcare has many misaligned incentives (which it most definitely does), reimbursement is still a viable way to appropriately assign (and confer) rights, responsibilities and liability. Its a perfectly acceptable business model to simply charge consumers directly but as a consumer I have a reasonable expectation that the data collected by devices advertised for clinical conditions will be useful beyond just personal interest. Today, thats just not as clear as it should be. One example here is the high profile AliveCor smartphone case for measuring single-channel electrocardiogram (ECG) rhythms. While a prescription is required (in the U.S.) to purchase the AliveCor device, the consumer is expected to pay for the $200 device with no real path for reimbursement. Thats all fairly clear,so theres no real issue there (and consumers can use a qualified health savings account to pay for the device), but thats where the clinical questions begin.
